How to measure your windows and doors

A few measurements and photos are all we need to prepare a quote for replacement windows and doors. You don't need to be exact to the millimetre: we confirm final sizes before anything is made.

Before you start

Building a new home? You don't need to measure. Send us your plans and window schedule and we'll quote from those. This guide is for replacing windows and doors in an existing home.

A steel tape measure

A rigid steel tape is more accurate than a fabric one. For wide doors, ask someone to hold the other end.

Millimetres only

Write every size in millimetres, width first and then height, for example 1200 W × 900 H.

The frame, not the glass

We need the overall frame size, from outside edge to outside edge of the existing frame.

Six steps to a quote-ready list

  1. 1

    Give each opening a name

Walk through the house and label every window and door you want quoted, such as Bed 1 north or Kitchen servery. Use the same name in your notes, photos and quote request.

  2. 2

Measure the width in three places

Measure across the existing frame at the top, the middle and the bottom, from outside edge to outside edge. Write down the smallest of the three.

  3. 3

Measure the height in three places

Measure from the top of the frame to the bottom at the left, the centre and the right. Write down the smallest of the three. For doors, measure down to the floor.

  4. 4

    Note how it should open

Write down the window or door type you'd like, which side the handle or hinges go on (as seen from outside), and whether any part should be fixed glass.

  5. 5

    Take photos inside and out

A photo of each opening from inside and outside shows us the frame, the wall around it and what's outside, such as a deck, path or balcony.

  6. 6

    Send it to us

Enter your sizes in our quote builder, or send your measurements, photos or plans through the quote form. We confirm final sizes and suitability before anything is made.

Measuring doors

Measure doors the same way: the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, centre and right, from the top of the frame down to the floor. Use the smallest of each.

Also note the floor on each side, such as tiles, timber or a deck, and whether you'd like a level threshold. Lift and slide doors are available with a flush sill.

Worth noting too

  • Which way each window faces. It helps us recommend the right glass.
  • Your site's BAL rating, if you're in a bushfire-prone area.
  • The colour you'd like outside, and whether the inside should match or stay white.
  • Whether you need supply only or supply and install.

Not sure about a measurement?

Tick "I need help confirming the measurements" in the quote builder, or book a site visit. Installation is always subject to a site measure, so nothing is made until the sizes are confirmed.

Common questions

Do I measure the glass or the frame?

The frame. Give us the overall frame size, from outside edge to outside edge, not the glass or the sash.

Why use the smallest measurement?

Openings are rarely perfectly square. Using the smallest width and height helps make sure the new frame fits the opening.

What if my measurements are slightly off?

That's fine for a quote. Final sizes and suitability are confirmed by InFrame before manufacture, and installation is subject to a site measure.

Can you measure for me?

Yes. Book a site visit, or tick "I need help confirming the measurements" in the quote builder and we'll be in touch.

I'm building a new home. Do I need to measure?

No. Send us your plans and window schedule and we'll prepare the quote and drawings from those.
